Vivo X Fold 2, X Flip Launched: A Lineup To Take On Samsung's Best

tl; doctor

  • Vivo launched the foldable phones X Fold 2 and X Flip in China.
  • Both phones have Snapdragon silicon and proprietary ZEISS cameras.
  • In any case, don't expect a global release anytime soon.

Vivo is no stranger to foldable phones, having introduced the vivo X Fold and X Fold Plus in 2022. These devices were Galaxy Z Fold series laptops. The company has now launched its first foldable device, the vivo X Fold 2.

The two flagships have a few things in common: ZEISS-branded cameras and the China-only OriginOS 3 skin. But otherwise, tools are completely different ideas.

Vivo X Flip

The Vivo X Flip is actually the company's first foldable model with a 3-inch rotating display. That's a much larger screen compared to the Galaxy Z Flip 4's smaller 1.9-inch curved screen.

Open the X Flip and you'll see a 6.74-inch 120Hz OLED display (FHD+, 1200 nits) with ultra-thin glass. The foldable device has a flexible mode style feature that allows you to fold your phone for different tasks. Interestingly, vivo claims that the X Flip ring is rated for 500,000 folds and unfolds.

Shell pinball machines don't have the most impressive camera systems, and the X Flip is no different. A dual rear camera system is expected here, which includes a 50MP main camera (IMX866V with OIS) and a 12MP ultra-wide angle lens. The latter has automatic focus, so you can take macro shots with an ultra-wide shot. A 32 MP selfie camera is also available on the foldable display, but you can also take selfies with the rear cameras connected to the display on the lid.

Other specs include a Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 processor, a 4,400mAh battery with 44W wired charging (no wireless charging here), and a side-mounted fingerprint scanner.

Vivo X Fold 2:

Want a tablet-sized screen in your pocket? Then comes vivo. The company claims that this screen also features ultra-thin glass for added protection.

The foldable Vivo also retains its predecessor's Flex mode feature, which allows you to flip the phone for hands-free video calling, video playback, or picture taking. The company added that the hinge is rated for 400,000 folds, but did not say how many times the screen itself will fold.

Vivo X Fold 2 now offers a 6.53-inch 120Hz (OLED, 120Hz) smart display. This results in a 21:9 aspect ratio, which should put it on par with traditional phone screens compared to Samsung's foldable displays.

As with previous Vivo foldable devices, the foldable screen and display of the smartphone are equipped with ultrasonic 3D fingerprint sensors. It's a departure from competing models that usually come with a side-mounted fingerprint scanner.

The foldable device has a 4,800 mAh battery, 120 W wired charging and 50 W wireless charging. Vivo believes this will achieve a 100 percent charge in 26 minutes.

In terms of photography capabilities, the X Fold 2 has a 50MP main camera (IMX866V with OIS), a 12MP ultra-wide lens and a 12MP telephoto lens with 2x zoom. On the smartphone screen is a 16 megapixel camera.
