Vivo Says Its New X90 Pro Phone Can Charge Completely In 30 Minutes
Vivo's new flagship phones take on the company's biggest Android rival. A few days after Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S23, the Chinese phone maker unveiled the new X90 and X90 Pro on Friday. The distinguishing features of the X90 Pro are the 120W battery charger used in the main camera and the 1-inch Sony IMX 989 sensor.
I had the opportunity to test the Vivo X90 Pro for a short time before launch where I focused on testing the camera. In my limited time with the phone, I found it to deliver versatile shots with clarity and good depth of field, both day and night. However, sometimes even during the day, the photos are not as bright as expected, because this phone surprised me with a 1-inch Sony IMX 989 sensor. Larger sensors are designed to let in more light and thus produce brighter and sharper images.
In addition to the camera, Vivo X90 Pro has all the features of the 2023 high-end. It has a 6.78-inch AMOLED display, a triple camera setup with two 50-megapixel cameras, a large battery and 120W fast charging. Xiaomi's 12T Pro has 120W fast charging, which was my favorite feature on the phone despite its 200-megapixel camera.
Note that Vivo X90 Pro is equipped with Mediatek Dimensity 9200 chip. This is a change from Samsung's latest Galaxy S23 series of phones powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Ge 2. There is also only one variant with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage.
Pricing information was not available at the time of writing. But expect a global launch for the X90 series in parts of Europe and Asia. No US release is currently planned.
Strange design choice on the back of the X90 Pro
For a 2023 phone, the design of the X90 Pro looks relatively plain from the front. The rectangular display has curved edges and a hole in the center with a selfie camera. But flip it over and you'll see a narrow scale that runs the width of the frame (below the camera module).
No, it's not a camera stick like the one seen on the Google Pixel 7 range, it's a flat band that says "Xtreme Imagination" on the back of the phone. Frankly, it's an odd choice that hurts the overall design of the phones. Above this confusing line is the camera's circular three-lens drum. There's also a bold live icon at the bottom, which I don't particularly like but I can see why it's there.
Zeiss lenses on the X90 Pro
Vivo This phone puts professional photography tools in your pocket. So it makes sense for the company to partner with Zeiss, a 176-year-old pioneer in the field of optical photography. The X90 Pro has three cameras: a 50-megapixel main camera, a 50-megapixel portrait camera, and a 12-megapixel wide-angle lens.
The photos taken with the phone were decent and I love how the portraits came out with the amazing bokeh. However, as I mentioned earlier, some photos came out blurrier than I expected given the size of the sensor. Below you can see how the cameras work.
Vivo X90 Pro battery
The X90 Pro has a 4780 mAh battery that can be charged via the included 120W charger or a 50W wireless charger (sold separately). The phone offers two charging modes: fast charging and balanced mode. Vivo claims that the X90 Pro can be charged up to 50% in 8 minutes and 10 seconds using flash mode. According to Vivo, Balanced mode seems to be good for everyday charging and it takes 29 minutes to fully charge the battery. I haven't had a chance to test this feature, but I plan to update it when I have more information, so keep coming back to this page.
Features of the new Vivo X90 Pro
Vivo has changed several features compared to the phone's predecessor, the V80 Pro. In addition to replacing the Qualcomm chip with a Mediatek one, it also ditched the ultrasonic fingerprint reader, telephoto lens, and screen resolution. Screen reduction. The ultrasonic fingerprint reader (3D Sonic Max) is hard to see in action as it has a more active area and requires only one click to install, which sets the X80 Pro apart from many other Android flagships.
