Tucson's Dusk Music Festival Returns For Round Six

Alison Wonderland, GRIZ and Young the Giants will come to Jácome Plaza on November 11 and 12 for the sixth Tucson Music Festival Night along with 19 other performers on three stages.

This year's lineup spans multiple genres, including alternative, indie, techno, dance and electronic music, just like previous Dusk lineups. Grouplove, Porter Robinson, Jimmy Eat World and Diplo led the way last year.

Dusk is currently Tucson's largest music festival, although it's not as big as others in the state such as Decadence Arizona and Goldrush Music Festival, two similar EDM festivals, or the annual Country Thunder Arizona festival in Florence, Arizona.

But in practical terms, what makes this multi-genre music event appealing to celebrities and consumers alike is the level of authenticity and intimacy.

"We're a small town, a small boutique festival, but I think we're doing a lot of things right and trying to make sure everyone has fun and offers something for everyone," Dusk co-founder Paige Rapp said. and festival director

Nearly all local merchants, restaurants, artists and community services take part in the festival. This provides an opportunity for students and local artisans to widely showcase their talents and place orders.

Most of the art installations are curated by students through the festival's partnership with the 3D and Advanced Media program of the University of Arizona School of the Arts. At night there is a battle of the bands and a DJ competition open to local artists. The winner will receive a game at the Vantage West Credit Union Discovery Stage.

"I'm very proud of everything we have to do to give these kids the opportunity to enter this stage," Rapp said. “We just love this city, we love this place, and we want to give back.”

Dusk's other co-founders are UA alumni John Reilly, Steve Stratigulius, and Pete Turner, who grew up in Tucson. A native of Phoenix, Rapp has lived here since 1992, which is one of the main reasons they were inspired to create the party. His passion for his city is part of the playing field for artists and sponsors.

“Good things always seem to happen in Phoenix. Tucson had nothing to be proud of, so hopefully this is one of the things that we can be proud of as a city,” Rapp said.

Rap is very good for planning and decorating the annual festival. He handles all design and construction through his company Repp + McLain Design & Construction. He even built last year's giant windmill and said he had another custom piece ready for the next festival.

The festival, which began as a mass festival, is gradually making a name for itself, growing by 15-20% annually. Expected attendance this year is 11,000-12,000 compared to 9,000 last year.
