Tecno Promises Accurate Skin Tones From Your Smartphone Camera, Whatever The Color Of Your Skin
The Chinese tech phone maker, which has a strong presence in Africa and Southeast Asia, is stepping up its efforts to make images more representative by launching a universal tone system.
In the past, smartphones struggled to produce realistic and attractive skin tones. While Apple, Google and Samsung have historically offered a wide range of colors on their good camera phones, Tecno has clearly shown its willingness to use Universal Colors for different skin tones.
While Tecno hasn't been able to dominate the Western market, the phone maker has introduced some unique imaging innovations. Tecno Phantom sound
According to Tecno, over-reliance on existing databases for AI has hurt the accuracy of skin tones when processing photos. To create universal tones, Tecno collects what it calls “unbiased data” to create color charts that truly represent multitone imaging technology.
Combining technologically advanced artificial intelligence systems and collaborating with universities working in the field of color science and aesthetics, this project is implemented in three stages. Its multi-layered color reproduction includes multiple skin tones in a single image. The environment optimization engine optimizes objects in its environment. Lastly, Techno's AI-powered computer portrait engine rounds things out.
In addition to the relatively light introduction of this feature, Tecno commented on the importance of skin tone representation on mobile cameras from a social perspective.
At this point, it is too early to comment on the effectiveness of this device and how far Tecno has come in terms of what other phone makers have done.
Considering Techno's main markets are Africa and India, it makes sense that the brand would be associated with better representation. After all, cameras often struggle to capture dark skin tones in a good, realistic way.
So the universal pitch could be more than just a marketing push, as no concrete information has been shared regarding Techno's efforts to create this feature. On the other hand, if Universal Tone supports significantly better representation of different skin tones in photos and videos, this is fundamental to a quality image experience for everyone.
Tecno has yet to announce its imaging engine, but is expected to reveal more details at the Tecno 2023 Future Lens event in Shanghai in December.
