Google Pixel Watch Vs. Samsung Galaxy Watch 5: Which Is The Best Wear OS Smartwatch?

The moment we've all been waiting for has finally arrived, as the Google Pixel Watch has officially arrived. There has been talk of this smartwatch for years, and after being ridiculed at Google I/O 2022, the Pixel Watch was launched alongside the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro.

Meanwhile, Samsung is now eyeing a fifth Galaxy Watch, releasing its latest wearables with the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4 in the summer of 2022. If you've been putting off buying a new smartwatch, we're almost done. Here's an in-depth look at how the Pixel Watch compares to the Galaxy Watch 5.

Google Pixel Watch and Samsung Galaxy Watch 5: Design

When you look at these two smartwatches side by side, it's easy to see which one is more "luxury" than the other. The Google Pixel watch has a stylish design made of 80% recycled stainless steel, while the Galaxy Watch 5 Armor is made of aluminum.

This smartwatch features a round display, the Pixel Watch featuring custom 3D Corning Gorilla Glass and the Galaxy Watch 5 using Sapphire Crystal Glass. While Gorilla Glass is what you'll find on many of the best Android phones and smartwatches, Sapphire Crystal Glass is 1.6 times stronger, giving Samsung the edge in durability.

Keeping the difference in durability, both smartwatches have a 5ATM water resistance rating that can be submerged to a depth of 5 metres. However, the Galaxy Watch 5 has an IP68 water and dust resistance rating and MIL-STD-810H certification.

In terms of screen differences, Samsung has the upper hand as it comes in two different sizes. Google decided to make the Pixel Watch one size fits all with a 1.2-inch screen. Galaxy Watch 5 is available with a 1.2-inch screen for the 40mm version or a 1.4-inch screen for the 44mm version.

Besides being more durable, the Galaxy Watch 5 also has the advantage of being lightweight, weighing just 29 grams for the 40mm diameter and 32.8 grams for the 44mm diameter. The Pixel Watch, on the other hand, is 36 grams heavier than the two models, which is attributed to the use of stainless steel over the aluminum.

When interacting with each of these wearables, it presents a different approach besides the touch screen. The Pixel Watch has a separate button located above the rotating crown (which doubles as a button). The Galaxy Watch 5 has two buttons, both on the right, with a microphone hole separating them. And if you can get it working properly, the Galaxy Watch 5 has a touch-sensitive bezel designed for easy scrolling through menus, as there's no rotating crown.

Another difference between the Pixel Watch and the Galaxy Watch 5 is the strap. For one reason or another, Google has chosen to use its own group link, which sounds great, but blocks the ability to use third-party groups. The Galaxy Watch 5 can use almost any 20mm band as long as it features a quick-release design.

Google Pixel Watch and Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 under the hood

You might be surprised to learn that a Samsung processor powers the Pixel Watch and Galaxy Watch 5. The former uses the Samsung Exynos 9110 chipset (as of 2019), while the latter uses the Exynos W920 chip. On paper, the Pixel Watch looks like a compromise for using older hardware, but it's not quite the same. This is because the Exynos 9110 is paired with a Cortex M33 processor, which allows you to update the watch face and several built-in health sensors.

Google has a great advantage over the competition with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. We haven't seen the launch of an Android smartwatch with massive storage, but it's certainly welcome. The Galaxy Watch 5 comes with 1.5GB of RAM and 16GB of storage, which is more than enough for most people, but it's still far from the Pixel Watch.

One area where the Galaxy Watch 5 has won so far is battery life. The 40mm version has a 284mAh battery, while the 44mm version has a 410mAh battery and Samsung claims it can last up to 50 hours. That's more than double the Pixel Watch's battery life, as Google says it can last up to 24 hours before you need a backup.

The trend continues in terms of charging methods, with the Galaxy Watch 5 technically using its own charging device, but it's more flexible. Basically, if you have a Qi wireless charging pad, you can put your Watch 5 in it and know it will charge.

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the Pixel Watch, as it uses its own charging device. There have been some reports that the Pixel Watch will recognize Qi wireless chargers, but it's not officially supported and likely won't provide sufficient fast charging speeds.

Google Pixel Watch vs Samsung Galaxy Watch 5. Health & Fitness Tracker

In addition to providing a gateway to all incoming notifications, it is also important for your smartwatch to serve as a tool to monitor your health and fitness. With the creation of the Pixel Watch, Google implemented a deep integration with Fitbit, drawing on the company's long experience in the wearables market.

Google also includes Fitbit Premium for six months free, which is where you'll find the best Fitbit smartwatches and fitness trackers. All workouts, sleep stages, and everything related to your health require you to install the Fitbit app, which you will be asked to do during the setup process.

As for the actual tracking capabilities of the Pixel Watch, most of its functionality comes from something like the Fitbit Sense 2. It includes things like tracking heart rate, measurements, and tracking 40 different workout results. Your heart's rhythm with the integrated ECG app. Plus, you can track your sleep and get a better view of things like trends, habits, breathing rate, and overall sleep score.

Instead of integrating a number of different sensors into the Galaxy Watch 5, Samsung is using a triple solution with its BioActive sensor. It will monitor your sleep, heart rate and blood oxygen levels and help provide an analysis of your body composition.

Samsung offers something the Pixel Watch doesn't, as it has a new skin temperature sensor. As it stands, it's not yet activated for Galaxy Watch 5 owners, but we're assuming it's only a matter of time before it changes. At the same time, the Google Pixel Watch does not include this sensor, which is somewhat unfortunate because the Galaxy Watch 5's skin temperature sensor is still useful.

Another thing to consider is the type of phone you are using. Neither is compatible with iOS, but maintaining the gate is ongoing. On the Galaxy Watch 5 side, there are features like ECG and blood pressure checking that won't work when paired with a non-Samsung smartphone. This has been the case for a number of years, and if you want to pair the Watch 5 with the Pixel 7, it's pretty frustrating.

With Google's Gatekeeper, it's more about actually blocking features behind payment walls. As mentioned above, the Pixel Watch can track up to 40 different workouts and activities. But that number rises to 1,000 with Fitbit Premium, which includes a six-month Google subscription with every purchase.

The problem is that once the Free Trial ends, you will lose various features such as sleep score, daily preparation, stress management, and more. We've really looked at whether a Fitbit Premium subscription is worth it, so we recommend trying it out before making the final decision. There are a lot of premium features that you might not use, but it's not fair to lock the essentials like daily setup behind the subscription.

Google Pixel Watch vs Samsung Galaxy Watch 5: Software

Moving on to the actual software interface, the Pixel Watch gives everyone a first look at Google Wear OS 3. In fact, the Pixel Watch runs Wear OS 3.5, the same version found in smartwatches. Galaxy watch 5.

However, it didn't take long for me to realize that the interface was very different, as Samsung used the standard One UI watch interface. As expected, Google's style in Wear OS 3.5 is very similar to Material You, with bubble buttons and an overall nicer interface.

When the Pixel Watch was first released, complete with a dedicated Google Home app and Google Maps wearable, it was feared that it would be a Pixel exclusive. Fortunately, this is not the case, as you can download it directly from the Play Store app on the Galaxy Watch 5.

Various settings are controlled and tuned to any of these clocks by different applications. Google released its companion Pixel Watch app on the Play Store, while Samsung relied on its own Galaxy Wearable app, as well as on the Play Store. Each of these apps allows you to change different settings and change the watch face. And when it comes to tracking your fitness metrics, the Samsung smartwatch uses the Samsung Health app, while Google relies on the Fitbit app.

Although the interface looks different, the two smartwatches are functionally identical from a software perspective. If you are familiar with One UI, Samsung can offer a more attractive design. But if you're a fan of the "stock" look, the Pixel Watch might be the best option. Whatever you choose, Google Assistant and Play Store are available.

The final part of the comparison is about how many software updates these two smartwatches will receive. According to Samsung, the Galaxy Watch 5 is expected to receive software updates for up to four years, officially supported until 2026. Meanwhile, Google promises only three years of software updates for the Pixel Watch. We expect Google to match Samsung in this regard, especially for the $350 smartwatch.

Google Pixel Watch vs Samsung Galaxy Watch 5. Conclusion

There's a lot to consider when choosing between the Pixel Watch and Galaxy Watch 5. For one thing, the Pixel Watch is a first-generation product from Google, which helps explain why it's not as feature-rich as its competitors. But the truth is that it offers more storage than we expected and a very fast interface with enough features for most people.
