Developing A Smartwatch To Detect Unwitnessed Outofhospital Cardiac Arrests

The University of Twente and its partners are developing a smart wearable device to automatically and reliably detect out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) and provide immediate emergency care. The UT (Medical Technical Center) will test the effectiveness of the proposed platform using simulation models and measure its impact on survival and response time. The study was published in the journal Resuscitation Plus .

Around 17,000 people suffer an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) in the Netherlands every year. Many die or have bad neurological consequences (uncontrolled cardiac arrest) because the emergency services (EMS) are not called or are called too late.

lecturer dr UT's Deria Demirtas explains its state-of-the-art solution: “We offer a technical solution for the automatic and reliable detection of OHCA and immediate emergency response. Our solution will drastically reduce the time it takes to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), saving thousands of lives each year and improving neurological outcomes. »

Artificial intelligence

“We are developing an open-source cardiac arrest detection algorithm based on photoplethysmography (PPG) signals and commercial smartwatches. PPG is a well-known medical technology. It can continuously monitor heart rate and oxygen saturation.”

“By measuring changes in light absorption during a heartbeat-induced pulsatile hemorrhage. Clinical experience and pilot data show that PPG can reliably detect the absence of pulsatile blood flow. Device independent interface

“We provide a device-independent interface (“engine block”) between cardiac arrest detection technology and the HartslagNu civil rescue system and medical emergency centers.
