The Android Rebrand Is Finally Here (and We Love It)

We first reported on the new Android logo in June and gave an A+ rating to an update that at first glance seemed to go in two different directions. The Android rebrand introduces a new capital-A font for Android, giving the mobile operating system a more mature look. But at the same time, turning the robot mascot into a 3D character breaks the flat design trend and gives the brand more personality.

Now Android has revealed images of another app that is ready to bring a new identity to the phone. And it looks every bit as good as we expected (for more inspiration, check out our pick of the best new logos).

The new Android logo has so far only appeared in presentations and YouTube ads, but will now appear on loading screens and other places in Android 14, which was expected to be released this week but has reportedly been pushed back to October. As we've pointed out before, the new logo appears to try to combine the best of both worlds, combining a super round letter with a big, pointy "A" on top. It probably shouldn't have worked, but it did, offering a mature yet modern and expressive brand.

The purpose of renaming R/GA is also to clarify the relationship between Android and Google. In a blog post, Jason Fournier, director of consumer brand management at Android, wrote: "We elevated the Android logo by using a large 'A,' which adds weight to how it looks when placed next to the Google logo. for Android's unique curves and personality, style The new Android better reflects the Google logo and provides a balance between the two.

Meanwhile, the 3D design allows Android robots and bug droids (apparently robot heads) to have different personalities for different applications and now have more characters. “As a visual symbol of our brand, we wanted the bug to be as dynamic as Android itself,” said Fournier. “We also updated the appearance of the full-body robot to ensure it can transition seamlessly between digital and real-world environments, making it a versatile and reliable companion across all channels, platforms and contexts.”

This robot reminds me of LG's recent rebrand. The tech company also introduced 3D animated characters to make the brand more engaging and attract a younger audience. 3D mascots seem to be all the rage (also check out our guide to the hottest logo design trends in 2023).
