Tecno Is The Latest Brand To Unfurl A Rollable Phone Concept
  • Tecno has just unveiled a concept smartphone that extends sideways.

  • The display, called Phantom Ultimate, extends using a motor to a 6.55 x 7.11-inch panel.

  • When the device is folded, the extra portion of the screen is at the back and acts as an always-on display.

While foldable devices like the Galaxy Z Fold 5 are becoming popular these days, we are still a long way from smartphones with a screen that sticks to the body. LG showed off several versions of its smartphones a few years ago, and Motorola did the same at MWC this year. Tecno is the latest brand to follow suit, showcasing the Chinese manufacturer's approach to developing a foldable phone.

The foldable phone, called Phantom Ultimate, uses a robotic system to expand the screen from 6.55 inches to 7.11 inches with the touch of a button. The screen expands in 1.2 - 1.3 seconds and the effect - as you understand - is very pleasing. Check it out here, courtesy of GSMArena:

Coming to the display, you're looking at a 7.11-inch LTPO AMOLED display with a 2296 x 1596 resolution, which Tecno notes covers 100% of DCI-P3 colors. What's especially cool about the Ultimate is that when the device is folded, the extra portion of the screen folds down and acts as an always-on display.

The Tecno has a textured back panel that makes the phone easy to hold and the device is 9.93mm long. Like all the other trailers, the Phantom Ultimate is just a concept and won't be in production anytime soon. This may change in the coming years when foldable screens become usable enough for consumers, but until then we have this disposable device.
