Shakespeare In Detroit To Present Techno Tempest Sponsored By The Gilbert Family
(WXYZ) -- Detroit non-profit Shakespeare presents his outdoor play at Martius Park in downtown Detroit. This free game is sponsored by the Gilbert Family Foundation and is based on the technology-inspired adaptation of William Shakespeare's The Tempest .
"Downtown Detroit's public spaces, including Campus Martius Park, are recognized locally and nationally as a world-class active destination and offer more than 2,000 free annual events developed and hosted by the Downtown Detroit Partnership, many of which are offered in collaboration with major partners," said Eric B. Larson, CEO of Part Downtown. It includes everything from music and art to food and family fun, as well as signature events like the annual Detroit Tree Lighting to promote, protect, and revitalize downtown Detroit. We are proud to continue our mission of connecting people, places and parks."
The techno version of The Tempest takes place in the late 1980s and early 1990s and is told from the point of view of a Detroit DJ. The production also references classic television series such as The New Dance Show and features local Detroit acts and Actors Equity Association actors.
"At the Gilbert Family Foundation, we believe that access to artistic and cultural opportunities is critical to the well-being of society," said Jasmine DeForest, director of arts and culture at the Gilbert Family Foundation. "They have an extraordinary ability to inspire, heal and bridge differences, and create spaces where all voices can be heard and celebrated. By supporting programs like Shakespeare in Detroit, we seek to encourage creativity and dialogue among Detroiters while strengthening the bonds that unite us all."
This is a special milestone for Shakespeare in Detroit as it marks 10 years since Motor City was founded.
"When I spoke to Eric Larson of the Downtown Detroit Partnership, he wholeheartedly shared my vision and supported the idea of using 2023 as a springboard for great things," said Sam White, founder of Shakespeare in Detroit. "Our conversations about launching a full summer Shakespeare festival in Detroit have given me strength and confidence in our future, especially when it comes to our youth and professional programs."
Shakespeare in Detroit takes place August 11, 12, 13, 18, 19, and 20 at 7:30 pm at Campus Martius Park. Click here for more information.
