DJ Minx Revives Women On Wax
"I stayed there for a few weeks before going to the DJ booth to see the DJ play," he says. “The DJ is Derrick May. I admire his craft and his ability to shout at people. When my interest was piqued, a few friends gathered some material for me and I started practicing in my apartment in downtown Detroit. It all started to come true when I saw Moodyman in the crowd watching me play. I didn't even play in some clubs, he was in the audience but not at the end of my set. One night I saw him in the audience, but this time he stayed. When I finished, he approached me and asked if I was ready to start my own label. He said he would help launch it and distribute it. He said it was the next step in my career and I had to take it.
Today he describes his sound as "alover, disco, hard house, groove with a hint of techno here and there".
Minx believes that electronic music evolves into a wide variety of sounds.
"You have to be open-minded when listening to and finding music, but there are so many different genres," he says. "It took me twice as long to find the kind of music I love, but I found a lot of new beats in the process."
Minx recently selected her beloved label Women On Wax for Pride Month and celebrated with the release of DJ MinxPresents Queendom Vol.1 Compilation.
"After quitting my 9-to-5 job in early 2019, I turned to another booking agency," he says. “After that, I started to travel more. Pandemic was a hit, so I was able to do a lot of songs and learn more about music production. After I found a new manager and things got better, I started working with more producers and continued to do woman's wife on wax.
The artist will soon exhibit with Moodymann and ERNO at MOCA.
"You can expect your legs to give out and your head to shake," he says. "I'm ready to move you!" »
In the meantime, he can't wait to perform for Splash House in Palms Springs.
"I can't wait to see the beautiful people," he said. “I've never been or played in Palm Springs, but saw it on the website and it looks like it would be a lot of fun! I am happy!"
Looking ahead, Minx has big plans for the second half of 2023.
"I will be playing Ibiza again and again for the rest of the year," he said. "I'm going to play Detroit Love with my family, I have dates in London, I'm going back to Berlin and I have a few dates in the United States. My label, Women On Wax Recordings, has other releases that are just remixes of artists I want to work with. I'm thrilled with it all."
