Tecno Launches Phantom V Fold The Most ‘affordable Folding Phone In India To Date

I will admit that Tecno is not a brand I have been following lately. And out of nowhere they have very popular products in the foldable phone market in India. Yes, we heard about foldable devices launching at MWC 2023, but we didn't expect them to debut here so soon. But here it is, and we're happy to share our device information with you, as well as product images and how-to resources.

Tecno Phantom V Fold Design and Appearance

The phone is similar in design to the Samsung Galaxy Fold, with a large 7.85-inch square foldable display and a 6.42-inch display when folded. Both feature a 10-bit LTPO AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and 1100 nits peak brightness. The outer screen is protected by Gorilla Glass Victos and has a resolution of 2550 x 1080 pixels, while the inner screen reflects 2296 x 2000 pixels.

Typically, foldable phones have a visible crease in the screen where it folds. Techno says they keep the gap at least 0.11mm. We can confirm that it is invisible to the naked eye in the showroom. Both screens are sharp and bright with color reproduction. One thing that caught our eye is that the hinge of the phone does not allow the device to be partially folded like its Samsung counterpart. It will take a few seconds for it to open completely.

Again, these observations are based on the showroom unit at the launch event and it remains to be seen if it will perform better in the retail unit. The back of the phone is made from recycled waste plastic, feels very comfortable and offers a good grip. The phone is 14.5mm thick when closed, which is a bit thick in my opinion. Yes, I know it's a foldable phone, but still. However, it is best that it is less than 7mm thick when unfolded. The Tecno Phantom V Fold weighs around 300 grams and is much heavier in the hand.

Tecno Phantom V Fold Camera, Battery, Specs

The phone is powered by the powerful Mediatek Dimensity 9000+ SoC and comes with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage. The Heios 13 Fold runs on Android 13. The battery capacity is 5000mAh and supports 45W fast wired charging, which fully charges the phone in less than an hour. This phone has five cameras; Two in front and three in back. You get 16MP or 32MP shooters on each screen.

Rear photography services include a 50 MP main camera, a 50 MP telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom and a 13 MP ultra wide angle camera with 120 degree FOV and PDAF. Neither camera has optical image stabilization, which is what I'd like to see on at least one of the 50MP cameras. The event lighting wasn't good enough to judge, so we'd like to reserve our opinion for the Phantom V Fold's camera quality test.

Tecno Phantom V Price and Offers in India

This is where it gets interesting. The Tecno Phantom V Fold costs Rs 88,888 in India with a one year warranty. Starting today, you can get an early bird price of Rs 77,777 from Amazon India. This made it India's cheapest foldable phone at launch.

And there are plenty of pre-launch offers too. If you ordered the device recently, you can get an extended warranty of one year. 24 months interest free banking and other EMI offers available on various platforms.

Then there is also the one-time screen replacement option, but this only applies if you damage the screen within the first six months of purchase. Overall, the Phantom V Fold looks like a worthwhile option for those looking for a big-screen foldable phone for under a million rupees. We'll find out if the asking price is worth it in our detailed test of the phone. Nevertheless, it should be enough to start a price war in India's foldable segment.
