Recently Xiaomi launched several Redmi phones worldwide. I am definitely talking about the Redmi Note 12 series. We're here to take a look at the two most powerful phones in the line: the Redmi Note 12 Pro 5G and the Redmi Note 12 Pro+ 5G. From now on, I'll refer to both without the "5G" part for simplicity. However, "5G" is included in its official name.

Since the Redmi Note 12 Pro and Pro+ are similar in many ways, we decided to cover both in one post. Both these phones are almost identical in terms of display, processor, RAM (some variants) and many other categories. Heck, even three of each phone's four cameras are the same. However, there are some differences. There is a reason to add the "+" alias to the more powerful device names. He said, let's go, okay?

The Redmi Note 12 Pro and Pro+ look almost identical, at least at first glance. Some differences should be noted here. The Redmi Note 12 Pro has a flat glass back, while the "+" model has a slightly curved side. The bezel is flat on both sides of the phone. You'll find a glass on both phones, and their bezels are plastic, though you won't really feel it. I had to look it up, there was no sensation when I used it for the first time. Both phones feel great in the hand and are not cheap at all.

They have thin bezels and a side-mounted fingerprint scanner that works well.

You'll notice that both have very thin bezels and a centered camera hole at the top. They have flat screens and all the physical buttons are on the right side. You'll notice that the volume up and down buttons are above the power/lock button. Speaking of which, this power/lock button doubles as a fingerprint reader, which works great on both phones. On the back of each phone is a three-sensor camera island. They are very similar but use a different main camera. More on this in the review.

They are very similar

You will also see the "Redmi" logo on the back of each phone. They are very similar in design, which is not a bad thing. In fact, they feel similar in the hand, although you'll notice the extra weight of the Pro+ model. It weighs 208 grams compared to the Redmi Note 12 Pro's 187 grams. The height, width and thickness are almost the same. The Pro+ model is slightly thicker, less than a millimeter. Note that they are protected against splashes and dust according to the IP53 standard.

accessories

With each of these phones, you get a box in a box. Xiaomi includes the usual gel/silicone case. It's actually a nice addition and a great first-hand solution until you find one that fits your style better. Some people prefer these gel pots, so if that's the case, they're not bad at all.

Redmi Note 12 Pro 5G and Pro+ 5G review: Display

Both these phones share the same screen. You get a 6.67-inch FullHD+ (2400 x 1080) OLED panel on each of the two phones. The screen is flat and offers a refresh rate of 120 Hz. Dolby Vision and HDR10+ content are also supported. The maximum screen brightness is 900 nits. It's fine, but they're not the brightest smartphones out there, which can be a problem if you use the phone in direct sunlight.

Both screens have the same protection, with Gorilla Glass 5 on the front. It's not a state-of-the-art solution, but the good thing is that I've had a lot of experience with Gorilla Glass 5 over the years, as it's less scratch resistant than Gorilla Glass 3. OEMs like to get into budget phones. So you don't have to worry about Gorilla Glass 5 at all.

Screens are bright, clear and generally good.

This display can change the refresh rate between 30Hz and 120Hz when needed and supports a touch sampling rate of 240Hz. The screen is very good. It's not great mainly because of the brightness, but it's what you'd expect in this price range, maybe better than you'd expect. The colors are vivid and the viewing angles are also good. Touch response is also good, etc. We can't really blame him, that's for sure. The program also has manual controls for this.

Redmi Note 12 Pro 5G and Pro+ 5G review: Performance

In terms of performance, these two phones are on par, at least in our experience. Unsurprisingly, both are powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 1080 SoC. It is backed by a 6nm processor and LPDDR4X RAM and UFS 2.2 flash. By the way, both of our devices have 12 GB of RAM, which is the highest level of options offered. The Redmi Note 12 Pro also comes in 6GB and 8GB RAM options, while the Pro+ model has 12GB RAM and 8GB RAM.

In terms of prices, they offer similar performance.

In terms of benchmarking, both phones performed similarly, which is not surprising given the specs. Fits Galaxy A54 and similar mid-range phones. Not bad, not bad at all. Redmi Note 12 Pro and Pro+ offer very good performance. This applies to both casual use and gaming. They are also very responsive and good at switching between different apps. There was stuttering here and there, but honestly, nothing noticeable. Overall, the performance was very smooth, I was even a little surprised. This chip brings a lot of improvements to what the Redmi Note 11 series has to offer, especially in the gaming department, so I guess it's not a big surprise.

They never get hot even when playing.

Even when we tried some games, the phones did not heat up. They were warm, but not hot. To be honest, I haven't played the game in hours, but I've tried a few more graphics-intensive games to see how things go. I left the screen on for a while to see how the phones responded. It didn't affect performance or heat at all. I have to say I was a little surprised by this piece. Software also played a role in performance, but more on that later.

Redmi Note 12 Pro 5G and Pro+ 5G review: Battery

Apart from other identical components, both these phones share the same battery. Inside each of them you can find a 5000 mAh battery. You'd assume the same screen, SoC, RAM and storage for the same battery life, right? Well, no, not really. It's comparable, but the Redmi Note 12 Pro got more juice in our tests. It offers about 15% better battery life. However, the use cases were very similar for both. However, most of you won't have to worry about your phone running out of battery at the end of the day. Overall, battery life is very good even with light gaming. Of course, it depends on your usage, signal, etc. Depending on 6-7 hours, it shouldn't be a problem. Note that both these phones don't work very well in standby mode. Average battery life is longer.

Redmi Note 12 Pro+ offers significantly faster charging.

Now they differ in the payload department. The Redmi Note 12 Pro supports 67W charging, while the Redmi Note 12 Pro+ 5G supports 120W charging. In terms of charging speed, the Redmi Note 12 Pro+ can be fully charged in half an hour. Meanwhile, the Redmi Note 12 Pro's battery reached 77% in our tests. It will take you around 55 minutes to charge to 100%, which is twice as long as the Redmi Note 12 Pro+. It's not bad at all, though.

Redmi Note 12 Pro 5G and Pro+ 5G review: Camera

Both phones share the same ultra-wide, macro and selfie cameras. But they differ in the main camera sector. The Redmi Note 12 Pro has a 50 MP primary camera (f/1.9 aperture, OIS, PDAF, 1.0 µm pixel size), while the Redmi Note 12 Pro+ has a 200 MP camera (f/1.7 aperture, OIS, 0.56 µm). pixel size, PDF). Both phones have an 8MP wide-angle camera (120-degree field of view) and a 2MP macro camera on the back. There is a 16 megapixel camera on the front.

Redmi Note 12 Pro daytime shots are above average

By default, the Redmi Note 12 Pro delivers 12.5MP images from this 50MP sensor. The photos are beautiful during the day. They have a lot of detail and are quite contrasty and bright. It can also be too bright at times, and the extra AI mode sometimes makes it even brighter. We also used this mode in some shots, although most were shot without it. The photos look a little recycled, but don't worry. Perfect for a mid-range phone.

Low light shots are also good.

When the light is low, the phone will decide when to activate the night mode. But this only applies to the main camera. For a mid-range camera, this phone handles low light pretty well. It has good exposure, retains enough detail and also controls noise. Even dynamic is not bad, which is surprising. If you choose to use the special night mode, you will get brighter photos.

Dual shots are good, but not as good as those taken with the main camera. Same for portraits, they are good but contour definition is not very good. The wide-angle camera works well in good light, which impressed me with the hardware offering. However, they look more artificial than photos taken with a native camera. They are pretty good though. As for the 2 megapixel macro camera... I don't fully agree with the ones used by OEMs. These sensors are very small. However, such an image can sometimes be useful, but only when there is enough light in the scene.

The Redmi Note 12 Pro+ takes great photos during the day.

Redmi Note 12 Pro+ offers 12MP images through the standard 200MP camera. This camera performs well in good lighting conditions. It gives a lot of detail and the leaves can be a little harsh. The images look less artificial than what the Redmi Note 12 Pro offers. They lean more towards the opposite side of things, but that's not a bad thing in my opinion.

2x photos are nice, but not as sharp as the original camera. You can get the same result by cropping the main photo, only slightly worse. The wide-angle camera works well in good light. For the most part, it removes noise from the image and the dynamic range is also decent. They're not as detailed as the original camera shots, but that's to be expected. Macro shots are very similar to the Redmi Note 12 Pro, which means they look surprisingly good for a 2MP camera if you're shooting during the day. Portrait mode performance is similar to the Redmi Note 12.

The phone performs well in low-light conditions, even when it falls in line with some flagship devices.

These low-light photos look better than the Redmi Note 12 Pro. Dynamic range is great, exposure is good too. Colors look good in low light and photos are quite accurate. It can also stand side by side with some flagships, but which do not have high-end cameras. Keep in mind that this is a mid-range phone and we take the image quality into consideration. Automatic night mode is supported, but only on the main camera.

Video recording is good on both phones, but nothing exceptional. It can't compete with flagship smartphones, but it's just as good, if not better. This relates to stability and frame.

Redmi Note 12 Pro 5G and Pro+ 5G Review: Software

The software on both phones is almost identical. Both come with Android 12 over MIUI 14. Yes, you read that right, Android 13 is not mentioned here, but you still get the latest MIUI. Xiaomi has a unique approach to updates, so you basically get the best. the company should offer it, but not the latest version of Android. As many of you know, MIUI likes to do things differently.
