New Exeter House And Techno Community Meetups A Hit In The City
The Exeter Cafe became a regular meeting place for a growing number of house and techno DJs.
To date, The Sunset Society Cafe has hosted four successful community gatherings, allowing young DJs to showcase their music at their professional tables in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere.
Tim Lawton, creator of the home and tech Facebook groups, said the community has been overwhelmed by the response from local music fans since last September.
"There's a real hunger for musical artists in a community like this," said Tim, who spoke for the first time this year last Saturday.
"It appeals to a wide age range from 18 to 60, the pinnacle of '90s riverers and original newcomers."
Sunset Society Cafe manager Charlie West quickly saw an opportunity after joining the group on Facebook.
Charlie said: "I've had the idea of an outdoor table party for a few years so I joined the Tim's House and Techno group on Facebook and saw the chat and thought this cafe would be a good place for people to have it Playing. ."
He also said that last weekend's meeting was the most attended, with 30 DJs contacted for a DJ spot.
Ali, a final year student at Exeter University and an experienced DJ, said: "It's a good test, you're not under pressure, it's almost a simulation experience."
For Neil Chandler, 56, the band fulfilled his dream of playing techno music commercially, not just in coffee shops, but for Lawton's Gravitate Techno Night.
Neil said: "Exeter didn't really have a house and techno scene so it's great to be part of creating a vibe in Exeter that didn't exist before."
In addition to creating opportunities for music artists, Tim said he is very happy that the community has recently moved to the area or wants to meet new people and "socialize rather than just enjoy the music."
