Techno Pioneer Richie Hawtin Backs New PhD Scholarship In Electronic Music, Cultures And Production

The University of Huddersfield has established a doctoral fellowship to honor electronic musician, DJ and techno pioneer Richie Hawtin alias Plastikman.

Applications for Richie Hawtin's PhD in Electronic Music, Culture and Production are open until February 10, 2023, starting September 2023. Winners will be selected by the university, under the direction of Richie Hawtin. It also provides academic support during the scholarship.

"There is a huge research opportunity in this PhD," said Rupert Till, a professor of music and musicians at the university, who is known as Professor Chill. “It can be anything in music, electronic music, dance music, club music, DJ culture or even composition or analysis.

“Richie has built his own label, tech company, mutual funds, sake brand, held residencies in Ibiza and recorded many genre-defining albums. This is a great opportunity to use his knowledge and experience.”

The university has a close relationship with Ritchie, dating back nearly a decade when the British-Canadian artist was completing his PhD. After receiving an honorary doctorate in 2015, Richie visits students for master classes and solo sessions where he gives advice on their music.

Commenting on the doctoral scholarship, Richie Hawtin said: “I am honored to continue my relationship with the University of Huddersfield and be involved in their doctoral scholarship program.

I look forward to offering my experience and knowledge in the many technological competency areas I have explored over the last 30 years to help students learn about our past and how our industry works. new critical analysis from a contemporary perspective.

The university has more than 20 recording and production studios, all equipped with high-end hardware, software and plug-ins, as well as an industry-leading collection of microphones and recording equipment. Its music department is ranked 5th in the UK for music studies and 25th in the QS World University subject rankings.

Although successful candidates are usually based in Huddersfield, the university also offers distance doctoral programs. It also offers diploma and postgraduate programs in creative music production.

The successful candidate will work in the Popular Music Research Group (PMSRG) of the Music and Technology Research Center (CRMT). PMSRG is a center for practical, hands-on, and text-based research on folk music. He has hosted numerous international research events, including the Ambient@40 symposium in 2018 and Creative Sampling, Sound Design, Artificial Intelligence at Mixing Day in 2022.
