Gurugram Woman Traces Phone Thief Using Smartwatch, Punches Him To Retrieve Device

Pallavi Kaushik, a resident of Gurugram, was making transactions using her smartphone when the device was stolen.

A woman in Gurugram allegedly used her smartwatch to track down a man who grabbed her phone and managed to get the device by punching her in the head.

According to a report in Hindustan Times, the theft happened last month when Pallavi Kaushik was using her smartphone to make a transaction at a store. Police said an FIR had not been registered in the incident till Monday and the thief was yet to be arrested.

Kaushik (28) resident of Sector 23, Palam Vihar, Gurugram. He was paying a shopkeeper on his phone while shopping at Huda Market on August 28. He told police that a man was looking over his shoulder as he paid the bill through UPI. Then he suddenly grabbed her phone and ran away.

Kaushik shouted for help, but no one around responded. He started chasing the man himself and chased him for about 200 meters before escaping.

Kaushik then tracks the location of his phone using his smartwatch. The smartwatch beeped continuously to indicate that his phone was nearby. The 28-year-old woman wandered the back streets of Sector 23 for nearly three hours until she found the exact location of her phone.

According to a Hindustan Times report, police said Kaushik was sitting on a motorcycle and saw the phone thief using his device. "After I lost my phone, I panicked because it contained all my contacts and important work information. So I wandered backstage until 9.15pm and tried to find it with the help of the watch. I finally saw it on a parked motorcycle. On the corner of a narrow street," he said.

Kaushik follows the phone thief from behind and hits him hard on the head. He also tried to pressure her. "He tried to free himself and the phone fell from my hand. He ran away and left my phone. I took it home. The next day I filed a police report. Palam Vihar police," he said.

Within three hours of Kaushik's phone being in his hands, the man had transferred Rs 50,865 from his bank account using his UPI UPI code. Based on her complaint, an FIR was registered under sections 379 (theft), 379A (robbery) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code.
