KCRW: How did you initially decide to team up and become AceMoMA?

MoMA Ready: We met at LES, A-1 Records in Manhattan. S. was working there at the time. After a while we met on the street and talked. After that, we just started making music organically.

How is tandem DJing different from co-production? how is it the same

AceMo: When we hang up, we're bouncing the other person's music choice. During the production we take different roles and change, maybe someone plays the chords and another the bass. I would say a big difference is that one has an audience and the other has our own ideas [with] as receivers that we can test without reservation. We can form experience with trial and error and practice. Then when it comes to performance, all of those ideas come out through the music.

It's pretty much the same with different actions using the same formulas to handle situations. I think that's why we work so well together. We apply this not only to music, but to everything we do.

Do you practice your DJ sets together or is everything on the side?

MoMA Ready: Our sets are mostly unplanned. We each choose our favorite songs based on a request we agree on, and then we go from there. That's how we like it. We don't always know what's coming our way, but we're usually able to make an impact based on our knowledge of each other's styles.

Do you have a favorite city to play?

Created by MoMA: New York. I love this place, it's a tough city but when you dance you know you deserve it and it feels good. Thank you for being able to contribute to the culture here.

Are there any cities that have surprised you with their response to your work?

AceMo: We just played in Boston and we were pleasantly surprised by the energy of the people there. It was amazing to see people dancing in places you don't normally hear going down!

Without which technology can you not travel?

MoMA Ready: noise canceling headphones and my iPad. The first is self-explanatory, but the iPad is much more versatile for entertainment than I initially thought. It makes the flight easier.

Do you have a song or version that you've released individually or together that feels like a sleeper?

AceMo: I think the EP we released was “Sleepers”. People really like our albums, but I think there are also gems in the smaller releases and I really like playing our Galcher Lustwerk remix.

What can people expect from your set at Primavera Sound LA?

Expect to bring our special energy to the dancers of MoMA Ready: Primavera. We promise it won't be what you're used to.

AceMoMA plays Primavera Sound LA on Friday, September 16 at 5 p.m. - don't miss it.
