Samsung Wants Its Foldables To Be Perfect Before Dropping The Price
For all the improvements Samsung has made with the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and its sibling, the Galaxy Z Flip 5, they still come with a hefty price tag. As details on a potential Galaxy S23 FE phone leak, we're wondering if the Fold or Flip lineup will get a "fan edition" model. According to a new interview, that seems unlikely.
In an interview with Tom's Guide editor-in-chief Kate Kozuk, Samsung's vice president of mobile product marketing, Drew Blackard spoke about his company's recently released foldable device. The interview covers topics like hinged design, growing competition, barriers to adoption, and more. The highlight of the interview, however, was when the two began discussing the FE model's potential for folds or reversals.
Samsung's FE series is a product that builds on its flagship counterpart and packs some great features but in a budget-friendly Android device. While Blackard has refrained from mentioning anything about the Fold of Flip's FE model, he did say he thinks prices will eventually come down. But he added that his company is more about sophistication than convenience.
The leaflets will eventually come down. We're really focused this year on fixing the issues we're having in our current foldable user base. With the Fold, it's important to make it thinner, make it lighter, and make it powerful. And in Flip, it's due to the flexible window and cover. That's why we focus on constantly improving the experience. Of course, as time goes on, as technology advances, we will continue to see innovation and hopefully lower prices in the future.
Improvements are Samsung's top priority right now, Blackard says, because that's the best way to configure its foldable devices. However, once the experience is perfected, Blackard said Samsung will start considering expanding its portfolio.
So if you were hoping for a cheaper Fold FE or Flip FE phone, it looks like you're out of luck. However, as the technology gets cheaper, prices are expected to rebound.
