When developing Buds 4 Active, Xiaomi followed the principle of "less is more". Buds 4 Active comes in a box with pebbles in two colors: beige and black. Both options fit easily into your tech life. We have a beige version.
We thought the matte texture would allow the case to age well, but we'd recommend going with the black option of the two, as it picks up smudges and scratches fairly easily. The body, which is clearly made of plastic, exhibits a rough texture everywhere except for the glossy finish that runs around the perimeter of the body. The Redmi logo is engraved on the back, while the Type-C port is located at the base, along with a hidden LED flash. Apart from these elements, there is not much to say about the design of the cabinet.
Turn the case over and the accessible feel of the TWS climbs through the hinges. The plastic buttons don't bother with a premium look or feel, but they also don't reflect the quality their price usually implies. The process of mating buds is quite simple, but only for the first time. The headphones feature Google Fast Pairing, which means they'll appear on your Android smartphone as soon as you open the case. Pairing with the iPhone also seems pretty seamless. You can do this by simply searching for a headset with an open case in the Bluetooth list.
However, pairing with another device is a bit of a headache. After pairing with one device, the only way to pair the headset with another device is to return the headset to pairing mode. This can be a tedious task as you have to tap the headphones five times at once to get them back into pairing mode. Since this is a budget offering, there is no multipoint connection. So be patient if you want to use it with different devices.

As with most TWS with touch controls, typing is a little random at first, but once you get the hang of it, the controls work pretty well. Xiaomi advertises them as bass heavy, but we didn't find them too heavy. If you're looking for really powerful bass, you might be disappointed, but if you appreciate clean, balanced sound, you'll definitely love the sound performance. The Buds aren't capable of picking up subtle sounds, and you don't get reflections or finer details in the sound, but if you want a good, basic sound, the Buds 4 Active are up to the task. That's thanks to a great fit, but the headphones actually managed to keep a lot of noise out of our audio. Of course they were no match for the ANC leaders, but they did quite well with the non-ANC buttons.
Fortunately, these headphones do a better job when it comes to calls; Does ENC really work? The sound was clear throughout and those we spoke to told us they could hear us very clearly too. and we also received such an answer from the other side. There is a bit of lag when playing, but that's to be expected at this price.
The battery life of the Redmi Buds 4 Active is also very good. Redmi claims that the earphones can last up to 5 hours on a single charge, and the battery life of the box is 28 hours, which we think is pretty accurate. The quick charge feature is especially useful, as the headphones give you about an hour and a half of battery life in just ten minutes.

For its price of 1399 units, the Redmi Buds 4 Active performs very well. The headphones have a clean design, are lightweight, fit well, and have good battery life. Most importantly, they sound clean and won't get bogged down in bass waves like many of their competitors. One big surprise is their performance in the call department, where most budget TWS tend to falter. We'd like to see some tweaks and tweaks in the app, but otherwise, the Redmi Buds 4 Active are a very good option for those looking for an entry-level pair of TWS on a budget.
