Motez Teams Up With Elsy Wameyo For New Single ‘Make Way

Anyone who listened to triple j's Good Nights with Latifah Tee last night (August 9) may have heard the premiere of new single "Make Way" from Iraqi-Australian techno artist Motez. Featuring vocals by Nairobi-born, Adelaide/Kaurna-based artist Elsie Wameyo, the song is officially here. Watch director Dave Court's surreal sci-fi clip below.

"Make Way" is Motez's second single of the year and the first single from their upcoming EP Coalesce . The collaboration with Court, a multidisciplinary visual artist, is not unique. "[Hof] happens to be a mutual friend of Elsie and me," Motez said. "We wanted the visual to reflect the essence of the song: a mix of warmth and cold, soul and concrete."

Motez and Court knew they wanted the video to show a brutal building surrounded by greenery. From there, Court let his imagination run wild. "The song's artwork and video is set in a surreal, sick city, where the buildings are decrepit and twisted," Motez said.

Motez and Wameyo can be seen in this ruined city. "Dave scanned Elsie and I as we performed the song using 3D point cloud mapping and projected our performance onto the cityscape as the camera panned across the rundown city and its buildings," Motez said. "Dave has done a lot of 3D and AI modeling, as well as VR sketching."

Coalesce's upcoming EP will be set in this fantasy world, which Motez and Court call a "hypercube." This conceptual structure helped guide the ideas of Wameyo's lyrics.

"I knew there were two perspectives I wanted to write about," she said. "The first is out of control and the second is twisted and helpless. But one thing I've noticed in life now is that even though we're all stuck, I feel like it's not not the case."

Coalesce's release date has yet to be confirmed.
