Androids Upcoming ESIM Transfer Feature Will Be Based On QR Codes [Gallery]
As SIMs become more popular after Apple's decision to only support US iPhone SIMs, Android is tuned to better support them with a new SIM card transfer feature.
Announced earlier this year, Google is working on a SIM card transfer feature on Android that will allow users to transfer their SIM cards between local devices. Since there is currently no native way to transfer Esim between Android devices, this is a very important issue. This leaves the process entirely up to the service provider and can be quite confusing at times.
Apple, while only using eSIM on the latest generations of iPhones, has made the process easy with a built-in iOS tool that can transfer SIMs between iPhones. The device, to the credit of the company, seems to have done a great job. With this device, Apple allows users to transfer SIM cards using their existing iPhone, a wireless transfer process that "works" between the two devices.
Google seems to be taking a different approach with Android.
Hidden in Play Services, Google has begun laying the groundwork for SIM portability on Android based on QR codes. The process shown below requires the user to scan a QR code to start the transfer process. Because most of this functionality hasn't been released yet, we only have access to this first part of @AssembleDebug, as well as the quick pair interface that appears before the QR code is scanned.
This process is currently not available to users as the eSIM transfer does not yet have a Google launch window. However, we're excited to see the rollout of this feature, and it will be based on a fairly robust QR code process. Previous results indicate that this transfer option could be part of the Android installation process, at least on Pixel phones.
