Android 4.4 KitKat Is Officially Dead
Congratulations on Android 4.4! Your gift is death . In a short and sweet post on Google's blog, we learned that Android 4.4 Kitkat is officially dead. Google will stop supporting this version in August.
We're sure some mobile phone users weren't even born when Android 4.4 was released. For those of us who remember, however, this Android version was released 10 years ago. Although it was version 4.4, it was actually the 11th version of the platform, after Jellybean. It was the last version of Android with decimal version numbers.
Android 4.4 introduced features like "Ok Google" to access the voice assistant, full-screen album art on the lock screen, emoji on the Google keyboard, unlimited home screen pages and other interesting additions.
Fun fact: Android Kitkat's internal name was actually "Key Lime Pie".
Android 4.4 Kitkat is officially dead
Android was a fun and entertaining version of the operating system that was being developed at the time. However, all extensions degrade over time, and Google is close to officially releasing version 4.4.
In a short blog post, Google said that active use of Android 4.4 had fallen below 1%. This should come as no surprise as nine more versions have been released since then. Since few people use devices with this version of Android, Google is officially withdrawing support.
This means that phones running this version of Android will not receive Google Play services updates. Since Google Play services are essential to the functioning of Android, phones running this version of Android will lose a lot of functionality in this case.
If you're still using an Android 4.4 phone (though it's not recommended), you might want to consider switching. It will officially come into force in August. As it is the end of July, there is not much time left until then.
