Vivo X Fold 2 and vivo X Flip offer strong aluminum frames and thin hinges with an almost seamless design. Both models have an IPX4 rating, which falls behind devices from Samsung, Google and HUAWEI, but these phones should be able to withstand rain or accidental drops. The X Flip also features a polished glass that attracts fingerprints, but you've still got snazzy packaging here. It's also a bit heavier than the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4, although I put the phone in my pocket while cycling and forgot it while walking. However, the device only has one speaker. It's loud enough, but covering the speakers doesn't produce any real sound.
The Vivo X Fold 2, on the other hand, features a leather back with a glass band that runs vertically near the wrist. It's a bit heavier than the Z Fold 4, but on the plus side it's significantly thinner. I'm not a huge fan of it myself, but the X Fold 2 is one of the few foldables that has a notification slider (the others were previous Vivo foldables).
Both phones feature a teardrop hinge for a sleek design. They're freestanding models, but both phones I've found have, for lack of a better word, soft hinges. That said, sometimes it takes several attempts for the hinge to stay in place; Otherwise, it will open or close completely. The company's website states that you must use the folded phones "at room temperature for 12 hours" for the free shutdown feature to work properly. It certainly helped, but it's still not as stable as Samsung's foldable devices.
Either way, the screen is one of the most important aspects of a foldable phone and neither device disappoints here. The home screen of the X Flip is just as good as that of the Flip Cover. The 120 Hz FHD+ OLED (LTPO) panel often drops to 10 Hz to extend battery life, although the software is almost always responsive. The panel also features ultra-thin glass for durability, while Vivo says it's rated for 500,000 flexes.
The Vivo X Flip has a three-inch external display that puts the cover display of the Galaxy Z Flip 4 in the shade. Too bad you still can't run many apps on this screen as you're limited to apps like phone, calendar, camera, fitness tracker, makeup mirror and app alarm. We asked Live if there were any plans to make the cover screen more useful, and the company told us they're working on an update with "convenience" in mind. . But here and now is a missed opportunity. At least the powerful third-party CoverScreen OS app is now compatible with this phone.
Vivo's decision to offer a landscape format display is also interesting. I think I prefer the vertical screen of the OPPO Find N2 Flip because it perfectly matches the orientation of the camera. The Vivo X Fold 2 also brings a great display to the table. The smartphone's 6.53-inch FHD+ display is a 21:9 panel, and that aspect ratio makes it a more useful phone than the Z Fold series. Although this isn't an LTPO display, it only toggles between 60 and 120 Hz. Fold the device up and you have an 8.03-inch (2160 x 1916, 4:3.55) OLED screen that's actually LTPO-type and drops down to 10Hz for tasks like reading or viewing images . The display gets very bright (animals require a maximum brightness of up to 1800 nits locally) and I had no problem viewing it on a sunny Saturday morning at the local outdoor market.
The Vivo X Fold 2 has one of the best foldable displays, but Vivo needs to fix the hinge on both phones.
The X Fold 2 also offers an ultrasonic fingerprint reader on each screen, and while it's not as good as the Sonic Max 3D scanner we've seen on other Vivo phones, it's always a fast and accurate experience. The Vivo X Flip has a side-mounted fingerprint reader and unlocking is reliable and fast. I don't have a huge liking for either option, but I'm happy to see a display option on a foldable device.
Both phones have a minimal display crease that is sometimes noticeable in certain situations and from certain viewing angles. But those creases look a lot less noticeable than they do on Samsung. It's not yet an invisible gap, but you can see and feel that we're getting closer to this goal.
The Vivo X Flip follows the latest trend of foldable flip phones with old flagship chips and the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 processor. It's still a very powerful chip and the SKUs are generally in the same range as the 2022 Best Stress Test at 69.8% stability. But system performance (multitasking, running apps, scrolling) was smooth, while games like Genshin Impact and emulators ran smoothly.
The X Fold 2 is the first foldable device to feature a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, and key CPU and GPU specs show it's in the same territory as other flagship phones. However, during the stress test, the phone slumped significantly, and by the end of the test, it only achieved a stability of 55.7%, almost reaching the level of the X Flip. Thankfully, actual performance was smooth, with scrolling, multitasking, and app launch all smooth. Gaming on the big screen is fun, and titles like Genshin Impact, Call of Duty, and emulators also run smoothly. However, I have reservations about long gaming sessions.
The Vivo X Fold 2 is the first foldable Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, but testing shows solid performance.
As for the battery life of the Vivo, the phone finally died on Sunday night, which is quite respectable given the workload.
The X Fold 2 packs a 4,800mAh battery and offers excellent durability in my opinion. The phone lasted about two days of regular use (including watching YouTube, surfing Reddit, and scrolling Instagram) even though I was on the phone screen about 90% of the time. A larger screen would of course take longer.
The combination of the X Flip's 4,400mAh battery and 44W wired charging results in a zero to 100 percent charge time of around an hour. Not outstanding in 2023, but still pretty good compared to Samsung and Google. Meanwhile, the X Fold 2's 120W wired charger recharged in an impressive 25 minutes on standard charge mode. If you want to save a few minutes on the last charge, a more aggressive charging option is available. Unfortunately, only the larger model has wireless charging (50W), but both devices come with a charger.
Both phones run OriginOS 3, Vivo's China-only version of Android. I managed to delete all Chinese-only apps, although there are still traces of translated text. I found adding Google apps and services pretty easy. I was able to load the Play Store and was then asked to enable system switching for Google services. It's a simple thing, even if Near Sharing doesn't work and you're using the internal version of Digital Wellbeing. Luckily, Google Wallet and pretty much everything else worked fine, although you can't use the Google app to pay when the X Flip is off (like the Samsung Flip phone), which is pretty disappointing.
I wish the X Fold 2 in particular had onscreen controls for things like auto-rotate and refresh rate. So if I just want to rotate the flip screen and lock the phone screen, that's not possible. It also lacks a separate home screen layout, so the larger screen offers two phone-sized home screens side-by-side. I hope Vivo will fix this issue in future updates.
The company announced that the two foldable devices will receive three major operating system updates and four years of security patches. It's not as good as Samsung, OPPO or Google's update policies, but it's still respectable and in line with the company's best flagship phones.

vivo has become one of the top providers of camera phones in recent years and the X Flip and X Fold 2 brought the product to life in terms of hardware. The frame includes a 50 MP IMX866V main camera and a 12 MP ultra wide shooter (with autofocus) and a 32 MP selfie camera. Meanwhile, the larger phone has a 50 MP main camera (IMX866), a 12 MP ultra-wide camera and 2x 12 MP portrait lenses. It offers a 16 MP camera on each screen.
Both phones offer vibrant colors as standard, a healthy dynamic range and minimal noise in most situations. I thought both phones offered the same dynamic range as my Pixel 7 Pro while still offering noticeable noise reduction. The phones produce bright, relatively detailed images even at sunset, although I did notice streaks of color in some scenes. I would like the X Fold 2 to have less sharpness and more stable recording in very low light conditions.
The X Flip uses digital zoom and the lack of detail is evident when looking at the pixels. I also noticed some depth errors and blurry facial detail when using Portrait mode on this phone. Otherwise, the X Fold 2 has a native 2x zoom, but anything above 5x is pretty flat, while the lack of OIS here means very shaky previews. That said, this 2x camera generally delivers excellent portraits with little or no depth issues. Vivo lets you take selfies with both phones' main camera via the secondary screen. Understandably, there's a big difference in image quality between the main and selfie cameras.
Add features like the ZEISS True Color option, T* lens coating to reduce flare and a variety of camera modes (e.g. long exposure, astrophotography, pro mode, continuous video option, effect portrait camera from ZEISS), and everything is fine on your way. : folding camera. X Flip is at the forefront of the best cameras in the flip space thanks to its many handy features and overall quality. It doesn't hurt that you get a fast experience, a large battery that fits in your pocket and a great shutter screen. But it's clear that the shutter indicator software itself is a major flaw, while the lack of a single speaker and wireless charging is also disappointing.
