Samsungs New Ultrawide OLED Gaming Monitor Costs Over $2,000, But I Still Want It

Samsung's new gaming monitor is so expensive, it could cost more than a desktop computer.

In a press release, the company announced that it is officially opening pre-orders for the Odyssey OLED G9, its new 49-inch ultra-wide gaming monitor. It's a monster monitor, and since it's OLED, it's a great choice for gamers who want not only great visuals, but also speed. However, all this technology costs $2,199.

So what do you get for $2199? Actually a lot. According to Samsung, the Odyssey OLED G9 is "the first Dual Quad High Definition (DQHD; 5120 x 1440) OLED display with a 32:9 aspect ratio." The monitor has a pixel density of 110ppi, a gray-to-gray (GTG) response time of 0.03ms and a refresh rate of 240Hz. The company says the screen resolution is equivalent to "two QHD displays side-by-side."

The screen features the new Samsung Neo Quantum Pro processor, AMD FreeSync™ Premium Pro, DisplayHDR™ True Black 400 and built-in stereo speakers. I was surprised by the presence of speakers, especially at this investment level of the monitor, as many gamers prefer to use headphones at all times.

James Fischler, senior vice president of Samsung Electronics America's home entertainment and display business, said in a statement that the Odyssey is "standalone in its class."

"Odyssey OLED G9 delivers an outstanding gaming experience that sets it on a level of its own, raising the bar for OLED displays. With the release of our Odyssey OLED gaming monitor, we're giving gamers a new level of immersion with picture quality and image quality that only Samsung can offer." new game features

Samsung says that anyone who pre-orders the Odyssey OLED G9 from the company will receive a $250 Samsung.com gift card. It will be possible to reserve until the 25th of the month, indicating that the official appearance may be on the 26th of June.

It's an expensive monitor that only those with money and a passion for gaming will invest in, but it's nice to see what Samsung is doing here. Of course, as with any technology, these practices are becoming more and more accessible.

For now, I'll stick with the 27-inch LG Ultragear. The screen is great and handles everything Xbox has to offer. But I won't lie; I can't help but want a monitor that Samsung will release to the world. I love OLED and really enjoy using it on my gaming monitor.
