Looking at seven days of news and headlines from the world of Android, this week's Android roundup includes Samsung beating Apple, Pixel 8 Pro camera details, Pixel Watch 2 leaks, Oppo A78 5G launch, Google Pixel software update, phone-free (2) has launch confirmed and a big move from the UK carrier.
The Android Circuit is here to remind you of the many things that happened to Android in the past week (and you can find Apple's weekly news roundup here ).
Trump's Galaxy iPhone sales
Samsung retained the number one position in the global smartphone market, after Apple. Samsung also managed to increase its market share quarter over quarter, unlike the previously mentioned iPhone manufacturers:
"TrendForce market data shows that Samsung led the smartphone market in the first quarter of 2023, with a market share of 24.6%. Its weight increased by 5.5% in the quarter, but fell by 16.7% year-on-year. Apple was the second largest OEM in the first quarter, with a market share of 21.3%. Its weight decreased by 27.5% and 11.9% for the quarter and year, respectively. Behind the two tech giants are Oppo (10.7% market share), Xiaomi (10.6% ).) and Vivo (8.0%).

Pixel 8 Pro improved camera
It's worth noting that some of the hardware changes, including the addition of a time-of-flight sensor, will be limited to the Pixel 8 Pro, presumably to create a gap between the two phones:
"The Pixel 8 Pro camera should take advantage of some of the benefits of the standard Pixel 8 in addition to adding a dedicated telephoto lens. That's a much bigger difference in camera performance between the Pixel 7 Pro and the Pixel 7, so the Pixel 8 potential. Buyers should consider the smaller model that choosing not only results in a loss of far zoom, but also a loss of overall image quality and processing depth.
A delve into the developer's latest Android 14 source code brings hints of Google's next smartwatch, apparently called the Pixel Watch 2. Again, there appear to be two versions: one for Wi-Fi and one for Wi. - Fi. . and mobile phones:
"As part of the update, we know that the Pixel Watch 2 is being developed under the codename 'Eos', and our team discovered another codename 'Aurora.' Roman) because they are goddesses of the dawn.We believe that the main difference between Eos and Aurora is the availability of cellular coverings.

Oppo's new budget phone
Oppo has launched the A78 5G here in the UK. Priced at £219, it's in the lower mid-range. The design looks a little dated and Oppo has added a lot of extra software on top of Android apps, but it offers long battery life and average performance at this price. Excerpt from the press release:
"OPPO A78 5G is equipped with a 50 MP main camera, users can take clear high-resolution images, a 2 MP self-portrait lens and an 8 MP front camera for high-resolution portraits. A78 5G Ultra-Clear Image 108 MP technology uses software. image resolution 108MP Algorithms to increase up to , giving impressive levels of clarity.

Massive Google Pixel update
The hardware in the Pixel family is getting the July software update. Along with the usual mix of bug fixes and security patches, there are plenty of new features. There's a lot going on, but what caught my eye (or ear) was adding a "tag" to the transcribed speech in the recording app:
"Google has a great recording app and starting next week it will be able to insert speaker tags into recordings. This makes it easier to understand who said what in the recording. Users will be able to export transcripts of recordings to separate Google Docs files, create speaker-tagged video clips and search for speakers. in the recordings

No phone (2) Startup confirmed
"Missing Promotion for Their Phone (2) is a classic game of misdirection and showmanship. Founder and CEO Karl Pei's guerilla campaign for his new cell phone has consumers looking everywhere, chasing shiny objects with nothing. Now, Nothing has Phone ( 2) announced the release date: July 11th, one year after the initial release of the Nobody Phone (1).

And finally...
While Android is unaffected, there has been a big change in the UK telecoms space this week, with two major networks merging to become the country's leading networks:
"[Vodafone and Three] plan to merge their UK operations, which will give them around 27 million subscribers and make them the UK's biggest mobile network. The deal still needs to be approved by regulators, who will look at whether it will help prices for customers. Vodafone and Three- 's merger, their combined market share will exceed Virgin Media's O2's."
