Oppo Find X6 Pro Review
Three 50-megapixel cameras, one with a 1-inch sensor.
The Oppo Find X6 Pro has one of the best camera packages on the mobile market and belongs to a limited group of phones that offer a 1-inch sensor for the main camera.
In fact, the Find X6 Pro has a 50 MP main camera with a 1-inch Sony sensor, followed by a 50 MP ultra wide-angle camera with autofocus and a 50 MP zoom camera with a stabilized periscope lens for 2.8x optical Zoom .
There's a fourth selfie camera on the front: a 32-megapixel camera with autofocus support.

The Oppo Find X6 Pro uses the same 1-inch sensor as the Sony Xiaomi 13 Pro and 12S Ultra and the vivo X90 Pro. We already explained what 1 inch means in our 12S Ultra review, not the actual sensor size. However, the old concept related to the diameter of the video camera tube was to project an image covering the size of the sensor. Learn more here.
With a resolution of 50.3 MP, a single pixel size of 1.6 µm and a Quad Bayer RGB color filter, the Sony IMX 989 sensor is the largest sensor available in a smartphone. The sensor sits behind a stabilized (OIS) 23mm f/1.8 lens with high transmittance glass (1 glass + 7 plastic pieces). The sensor features Octa PD autofocus. It should also offer 2x lossless zoom.
The ultra-wide and zoom cameras use the same sensor - a 50MP Sony IMX890 with 1/1.56-inch 1/0µm pixels and full-pixel autofocus (or Octa-PD AF) on both cameras. This means that the ultra-wide camera supports focusing at a distance of 4 cm, the zoom camera has a minimum focusing distance of 25 cm.
The ultra-wide-angle camera uses a 15mm f/2.2 7P free-form lens.
At the heart of the zoom camera is a 65mm f/2.4 5P periscope lens with top prism image stabilization (OIS). According to Oppo, it is said to be the longest-lasting periscope zoom lens on the smartphone market. The lens offers 2.8x zoom on the main camera, but Oppo has opted for fixed 3x and 6x increments in the camera app.
Rear camera setup is aided by a laser transmit/receive system that should work well with autofocus and possibly portrait mode.
Next to the LED flash is a color spectral sensor.
The collaboration with Hasselblad brings the Swedish camera maker's color science into Pro mode - what Oppo calls natural color calibration.
The spectral color sensor on the back definitely helps the color department by offering more accurate auto white balance.
Marisilicon X's proprietary NPU is responsible for processing the data streams, especially for HDR and low-light videos.
Last on the camera list, the selfie camera uses a 32MP Sony IMX 709 1/2.8-inch sensor with 0.8µm pixels, a quad Bayer filter and a 21mm f/ 2 wide-angle lens. Since this camera has a relatively wide field of view, the camera app offers a basic digital zoom of 0.8x (21mm), 1x (25mm) and 2x (49mm) - 25mm and 49mm.
There's nothing special about the default camera app - it's similar to what you'll find in the latest versions of Oppo or Realme. The main camera modes are arranged in a typical carousel. The usual controls for HDR and AI modes are above the viewfinder. The settings menu offers a standard list of options.
Hi-Res, Auto HDR and Auto Macro modes are hidden in the More submenu.
In the viewfinder you'll find four switches: one for ultra wide mode, one for prime 1x mode and two zoom shortcuts - 3x and 6x. If you use the zoom wheel, you'll notice that the transition from the main camera to zoom occurs at the 2.8x point.

And while there's a dedicated night mode, we've also seen night mode processing in photo mode, provided the lighting conditions are met and all photos (standard and night) are the same. There's also a night mode tripod mode that uses longer exposure times for better results. All three cameras support night mode.

Oppo has introduced Pro mode for all of its cameras. With it you can control ISO, exposure, white balance, manual focus and shutter speed (up to 30 seconds). There's also focus peaking and a histogram to help you out. RAW and RAW+ (High Dynamic Range) are available for all three main cameras.

Dolby Vision HDR video recording is supported, just like on the iPhone. Its maximum resolution is 4K30.
In the advanced settings you will find options for recording in 10-bit color mode, HEIF format for photos and HEVC format for videos.
Photo quality during the day
The main camera of the Oppo Find X6 Pro has a standard resolution of 12.5 megapixels and is one of the best you can get from a smartphone these days.
The amount of resolved detail is high, while the processing is mature and the rendering is balanced and natural.
All photos are noise-free, reasonably sharp, and colors are vibrant without being overwhelming. The contrast is high, the dynamic range is sufficient but not too high.
Some flat surfaces look so clean they look like wax. It's only visible up close, but compared to other camera phones with 1-inch sensors, it definitely stands out.

Oppo says its main camera has a 2x sensor zoom and we can confirm that it's pretty good. This is likely achieved by cropping the middle of the 50MP output as it doesn't look like 2x optics; You can clearly see where the scaling algorithm failed with fine details like trees, grass, and tiles. .
However, the 2x zoom produces fairly detailed photos with the same excellent qualities as the 1x zoom images. However, the waxiness of some flat textures is more pronounced this way. But even that is only visible when you zoom in.

Ironically, 50MP photos taken with the main camera look much better than 12.5MP photos, and we don't recommend using this mode.

The ultra-wide-angle camera is based around a large 50MP sensor, although the overall pixel size is 2.0µm. The camera supports autofocus and uses a free-form lens; Instead of traditional spherical or aspheric optical elements, the camera uses an asymmetrical lens with a complex and uneven surface. The free-type lens is resistant to optical aberrations and allows better quality of light onto the sensor, two of the main benefits of an ultra wide-angle camera.
The 12.5-megapixel photos from the ultra-wide-angle camera are definitely among the best in their class. They are incredibly accurate, quiet and have minimal angular distortion. Even filigree details such as leaves or dog hair fall very well and look natural.
White balance is accurate and colors are excellent, matching the colors in the main camera photos. Contrast is again excellent and dynamic range is excellent but not too extreme.
Overall, this ultra-wide camera takes amazing pictures, just like the main cameras.
Thanks to the automatic focus, the ultra wide-angle camera takes over the function of macro photography. Note that there's an auto macro option, but when it's on it's cropped from the photo and enlarged to fit in the main camera's field of view (23mm). So instead of using auto macro, we took our close-up shots with the standard 15mm prime.
And the ultra-wide close-ups are just superb. The center of the image is incredibly detailed and clear, with no trace of noise and excellent color reproduction. The background also convinces with beautiful bokeh, good dynamic range and good overall presentation.
In fact, they have to be among the best you can get from a phone today in terms of picture quality.

The ultra-wide camera also supports high-resolution 50-megapixel capture, and again, photos are a simple 12.5-megapixel standard output.

The zoom camera uses the same large 50-megapixel sensor as the ultra-wide camera, but sits behind a 65mm periscope lens. This means it offers around 2.8x optical zoom on the main camera (23mm lens). And if you use the zoom wheel, you'll notice a shift between cameras around the 2.7x-2.8x mark.
Oppo offers two zoom shortcuts in the viewfinder - 3x and 6x - and you can imagine that you'll need to zoom in and out, or at least zoom in. Since the sensor has a resolution of 50 MP, a 3x zoom can be achieved without loss, and 6x should theoretically be better than just a digital zoom thanks to touch zoom.
Now let's look at some enlarged images.
Standard 3x zoom photos are great. They have excellent detail and sharpness, excellent colors, high contrast and good dynamic range. Noise is reduced to a minimum.

The 6x photos are taken from the 50MP image center, which makes them look a little artificial, but they contain more detail than just the crop and top edges (we tried). Of course the sharpness is on point, but for web release they look good and you can see what's far from you.
The pictures are poor in detail but the rest of the features are standard 3 pictures.

And here are some photos at 10x magnification. It's quite to be expected, they're soft, detail is poor, but they definitely have an edge.

High-resolution photos from the zoom 50-megapixel camera are just as bad as those from the other two 50-megapixel cameras - they look like full-size 12.5-megapixel images.

Portrait mode offers 3x and 1x zoom levels, with 3x being the default option. The portraits we took with the zoom camera are ideal, with excellent rendition of objects (resolved detailing and processing), impressive colors, high brightness and no noticeable noise.
The background is nice too - the bokeh has improved a little but doesn't look artificial - on the contrary - it's completely natural and realistic.

1x portraits also deserve praise: the subject is well processed with lots of detail and the separation from the background is still effective. The modeled bokeh is quite nice.

Finally, let's talk about the selfie camera. This is a 32-megapixel quad Bayer camera with autofocus - a rarity these days. It stores 32-megapixel images instead of 8-megapixel images, which means you shouldn't expect a lot of detail.
And indeed, 32MP selfies are surprisingly good. Non-HDR shots (first two images) are incredibly detailed, with balanced rendering and natural processing. Colors are accurate, noise is low and dynamic range isn't very low.
Auto HDR works for the rest of the photos, and the resolution of details decreases almost twice, but the dynamic range gets the desired increase, and the selfies are excellent. 32 MP is more than enough. So when scaled down to 12MP, 8MP or less, they look as iconic as they do today.

Photo quality in low light
The photo mode supports the automatic night mode and takes the same photos as the special night mode, which also works on automatic level.
Night shots with the main camera - one of the best you can take with your smartphone in 2023. The detail is top notch, the exposure is accurate, the dynamic range is decent, there is no noticeable noise and the color saturation is amazing.

The same goes for the quality of the super wide-angle camera's low-light photos. The images we took are stunning, with great detail and sharpness (for the UW camera), bright appearance, excellent color reproduction and wide dynamic range in every scene. This is one of the best UW shots we've seen recently, and the sensor's large pixels, high-quality lenses and autofocus definitely helped.
