Talking With Techno DJ & Producer Matt Sassari About ‘Step To
Marseille-based French DJ and producer Matt Sassari recently released his new EP, Step Two , featuring the original version of "Step Two" and a remix of Melody's Enemy.
Speaking about the EP, Sassari said: “So happy to be back on There Is A Light Records with my new EP. It's for the night warriors who love to smash the dance floor. Now stop reading and move!'
Sassari's rendition of "Step Two" leans towards the dark side of house music, hitting hard from the moment you hit the track and setting an ominous tone. While Melody's Enemy takes no prisoners in its interpretation, it completely transforms the original into a techno track with a frenetic beat and adrenaline rush.
Although relatively new to the scene, Sassari has released music on labels such as Terminal M, Intec, Tronic, Relief and Sci + Tec, amassing millions of streams on Spotify and over 3.6 million monthly listeners.
CelebMix spoke with Matt Sassari about techno music, the differences between the French and American music scenes, and how their sounds have evolved.
Hi Matt, thanks for your time and congratulations on your latest release. What inspired your new EP Movement ?
Hello Celebmix! Thank you for being me. I am mainly inspired by the voice and the bass.
Melody's Enemy is a very interesting option for remixes. What is the thought process behind the selection?
Yeah, I love this remix of Melody's Enemy, we got a TIAL Records remix list and Melody's Enemy was my favorite.
You have released many albums on TIAL. What drew you to the label?
Yes, this is my third release from TIAL and I am very happy to work with them, they have a great team. Sian (octopus) introduced me to the owner of The Archer label and he introduced me to the label/project which I instantly fell in love with.
What is the biggest difference in the American music scene compared to your country?
I think the American music scene is much more open now than in Europe. Now we're seeing a lot of big festivals/clubs/events in the US booking new artists from house to techno, which is great.
Some people say that techno (or house music) is boring because it's repetitive. How about that?
Because they haven't found the groove yet lol or haven't listened deep enough you know. Or are you listening to this new fast/loud 150bpm techno which I agree is annoying…
Did your voice develop naturally or did you deliberately push it in a certain direction?
It evolves naturally, ever since I started making music I've always liked techno/tech-house and I don't push it in a certain direction, it's something I can't control when producing.
You've always been an electronic music guy. Or are there other genres that you listen to regularly?
I've been listening to electronic music since I was very young, but I've listened to different genres: rap, pop, etc.
Who do you think is the most innovative game developer today?
I would say Fred Again and Eliza Rose with their incredible song Bota
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be and why?
Less social media, more focus on music, that's the most important thing for me. The rest is just noise...
Can you share your biggest goals in life?
Ha ha, it's hard, but I would say I can make a living doing what I love, which is creating and traveling the world to spread my music.
