One of the iPhone's best camera features has suffered an unfortunate setback. Since the arrival of iOS 16, theater mode videos are no longer supported by major video editing apps, including iMovie and Final Cut Pro. There is currently no workaround available.

Cinematic mode, introduced with iPhone 13, lets you shoot video with shallow depth of field and film-like focus control. However, for many users, it is no longer possible to edit these videos on Mac.
According to posts on Apple's official support forums, as well as various threads on Reddit , videos shot on iOS16 iPhones cannot be edited when cinema mode is enabled. Attempting to do this in Final Cut Pro, for example, results in the error message "Could not enable movie effects."
The problem seems to be limited to iOS16. So if cinema mode videos are a big part of your workflow and you haven't updated yet, you might want to wait until Apple releases a fix. At least one user was able to downgrade from iOS 16 to iOS 15.7 and restore functionality. Unfortunately, this does not help iPhone 14 owners who will be using the new version of iOS from the moment of purchase.
Based on current information, updating Final Cut Pro or iMovie did not fix the issue or update to the latest version of macOS Ventura Beta. For now, we just have to wait and see: Apple is aware of the problem and the fix should come in the form of an official update. Hopefully upgrading to the released version of macOS Ventura isn't necessary to fix this issue as it may freeze old Mac owners forever.
